The mountains have steps carved in their side so you can conveniently walk up. The steps are 7.5 (Eastern) or 15 (Western) km long, and since they rise about 1000 m you'd think it wouldn't be too steep; but since they rise about 15 km and drop about 14 km to get to the end, it's actually a fairly grueling walk, especially for those with arthritic knees. We puppied out by taking a cable car the second half of the way. If you look closely at the picture of the Western Steps you can see a cluster of people right at the right side of the mountain; they're huddled together at the base of the Hundred Steps, which run up through that crack in the rock and which are as much fun as they sound.
